Need some tech help? On Saturday, March 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., De Anza High School’s Information Technology Academy (ITA) will be hosting a “Free Fix Day” during which the community can bring their dysfunctional laptops and desktops to the school’s cafeteria for free repair.
“Our goal is to do what we can to offer real, work-based learning opportunities for our students while also doing our part to help bridge the digital divide in Richmond,” said ITA Lead Teacher Ben Gill, a Richmond native. “The digital divide in Richmond is real.”
According to Gill, some of the issues his students can help the public with include virus/spyware removal, data back-up, operating system installations, initial computer setups, basic computer troubleshooting and even hardware issues—if people bring in the required parts.
At De Anza, Gill heads up the ITA, instructing 150 students in all things tech. Embedded as part of the high school’s daily educational curriculum, the ITA is the second largest academy on campus. Gill said that—even in today’s tech-driven environment—there are still a number of students who don’t have computers at home.
Typically 50-60 community members come out for tech assistance at the academy’s Free Fix Days, but there’s always room for more.

“For Richmond applauds De Anza’s ITA for taking an altruistic approach to their Free Fix Days and for doing their part to close our community’s digital divide. We hope Richmond residents will seize upon this exceptional opportunity for free assistance with their tech challenges.”
