Performing arts is alive and well at Richmond High! There are opportunities for Dance, Music, and Theatre. During our 2016-2017 performance season, our production of Disney’s High School Musical resulted in a sold-out opening night and capacity crowds during the engagement. Our productions for 2017-2018 included The Great Gatsby and The Wiz. The students of CAPA  have participated in field trips to the American Conservatory Theatre, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, California Shakespeare Theatre Company, San Francisco Playhouse, and The Shotgun Players Theatre. In November, Harvey Flores (CAPA Senior ‘18) and Cristal Molina (CAPA Junior ‘19) were the winners in the Best Performance in a Scene category at the WCCUSD Theatre Festival. Recently Miguel De La Cruz (CAPA Senior ‘18)  was a recipient of the CCCOE (Contra Costa County Office of Education) Student of Excellence award.

RHS and CAPA theatre students not only perform, they also assist with the design and direction of our productions. Students will learn how to navigate lighting and sound systems, design, construct and paint sets for all of our productions. Our academy pathway also collaborates with partners within the industry in order to develop opportunities for resume building and internships. Our seniors participate in a service learning project in their community. This experience results in a presentation to a panel of professionals highlighting their learning experience while fielding questions.

We operate as a professional learning community, where collaboration is the engine of improvement for curriculum and student achievement. CAPA teachers integrate the arts with English, Social Science, Math and Science classes. Through the study of the creative and performing arts, students can also examine their cultural roots, history, and social and economic issues.

Even if you never participated in any creative activities, as a member of CAPA you will grow artistically, intellectually and set the foundation for a career in creative arts. CAPA is a family of creativity.
